MARTHA A. GRACIE

PENOBSCOT - Martha A. Gracie, 80,
passed away April 9, 2009,
surrounded by her family. She was
born Feb. 18, 1929, in Penobscot, the
daughter of Thomas and Hittie
(Harrington) Pickering. Martha lived
her entire life in Penobscot, and
worked many years as a certified
nurse's aide at Blue Hill Memorial
Hospital and as a ward clerk at Maine
Coast Memorial Hospital. Martha
enjoyed many things in her lifetime -
her family, her new car every few
years, attending stock car races,
especially with her first born grandson,
Aaron, many wrestling events featuring
both grandsons, Aaron and Tim
Boetsch, and many travels with friend,
Jean Lundeen and annual trips to
Florida. She was also a lifetime
member of the Eastern Star. She most
enjoyed the sight of her children and
grandchildren coming through her
front door. She is survived by her
children: son, Raymond Pickering of
Clinton; daughter, Joyce Gracie of
Richmond; daughter, Janice Boetsch
and husband, Greg, of Lincolnville and
their sons, Aaron and his wife, Julie
and daughters, Jasmine, Madison and
McKinley, all of Fort Knox, Ky., and Tim
and his wife, Jade and son, Christian,
of Sunbury, Pa.; son, Edward Gracie
and his daughter, Mary and his
fiancee, Beth Storms, all of Penobscot;
and daughter, Sally Bottie and
husband, Art and children, Emily and
Anthony, of Orono. Martha is also
survived by two sisters, Virginia Gross
of Bucksport and Mary Ginn of East
Orland; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her
husband, Cecil E. Gracie, Oct. 22,
1974; sister, Dora Lord; and two
brothers, Herbert and Frank Pickering.
.A private graveside service was held  
at the Back Ridge Cemetery, East
Orland.  Donations may be made to
Back Ridge Cemetery Association,
care of Molly Lord, Box 144, Back
Ridge Road, Orland, ME 04472.
RANDY SCOTT WARDWELL

PENOBSCOT - Randy Scott Wardwell
died unexpectedly Nov. 2, 2009, at
Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. Randy was
born June 12, 1959, in Castine. Those
who knew Randy will always remember
his eagerness to help anyone in need,
his great love for his pets and his
unwavering smiles. He dearly loved his
family and enjoyed hunting and fishing
with the boys at Eddie's camp. He was
predeceased by his father and best
friend, Lawrence "Bucky" Wardwell. He
is survived by his loving wife and friend
of 30 years, Wanda Marie Wardwell;
his son, Troy Scott Wardwell of
Penobscot; his mother, Patricia
Wardwell of Penobscot; sisters, Robin
Vogell and her husband, Scott, of
Castine, and Lisa Haas and her
husband, Ronald, of Penobscot; his
grandmother, Mary Robshaw of
Bucksport; aunts, uncles, nieces and
nephews. He will be especially
remembered by his good friend, David
Calder of Penobscot. Graveside
services were held 2 p.m. Saturday,
Nov. 7, at Castine Cemetery with the
Rev. Sandra Reed officiating.
RALPH SMITH WARDWELL

PENOBSCOT - Ralph Smith Wardwell,
65, died Jan. 14, 2009, at a Bangor
area hospital. Ralph was born May 7,
1943, in Castine, the son of Frederick
S. and Josephine (Ladd) Wardwell Sr.
Ralph attended schools in Castine and
started his lifetime career as a house
painter, of some renown, in his teens
only interrupted by a stint in the U.S.
Coast Guard, where he was stationed
on the Great Lakes. He enjoyed the
outdoors, clamming along the
Penobscot River and combing the
beaches around Castine looking for
buried treasure after a good Maine
storm, and in his boat with chosen
friends. Ralph is survived by his three
children, Josephine M. Gray and
husband, Wade, of Lincoln, Archie W.
Wardwell of Brownville and William F.
Wardwell of Perkionenville, Pa.; as well
as five grandchildren, Emily and Justin
Gray, Ashley, Nicole and Carter
Wardwell; brother, Frederick S.
Wardwell Jr.; sister, Sylvia W. Arey and
husband, Robert, all of Penobscot;
brother, Anthony M. H. Wardwell of
Brewer; two stepsisters, Robin Adams
of Brewer and Mitzie Adams of North
Carolina; niece, Jessica Crocker;
nephews, Nathan Wardwell, Robert
Arey Jr. and George A. Arey; as well
as his two honest and loyal canine
companions, Captain Morgan and
Freudin. Ralph was blessed with many
friends, including three very special
friends, Ruth Eaton, Lloyd "Burkey"
Billings and Charleen Wiseman. He
was predeceased by his parents; and
one brother, Arthur L. Wardwell.
